Grandma has been an amazing pastry chef all her life. She is a natural at it. No schooling, just natural talent and love of baking and cooking for her family and friends. I remember as a girl the many visits and sleepover’s I had with my grandmother and she was always busy in the kitchen whipping up something. She even fed her many dogs the leftovers from our meals. I remember making pie crusts, cookies, meat sauce (the meat sauce with every possible meat in it) among many other things. My favorite cookie is her peanut butter kiss cookie which I have now named Grandma’s Kiss but she called peanut butter blossom. Each Christmas grandma, even today at 89, goes into the kitchen and turns out many dozens of different cookies. As a girl, I remember her calling me to ask what I would like for her to bake me. I always requested this cookie, Grandma’s Kiss.
Now I have her treasured recipe and make it myself.
You can see I get my passion and talent from her. You can visit my website http://www.jensweetnsavory.com/ which is a work in progress to view my creations and story.
The above photo was taken a year ago while I was visiting her. She didn’t want to take the picture because she wasn’t dressed. I wanted the picture because each day she grows older and sicker.
In honor of my Grandma’s birthday today, I’m going to post one of her cookie recipes.
Grandma’s Kiss
1 3/4 cup Flour (preferably King Arthur)
1 tsp Baking Soda
1/2 tsp Salt
1/2 cup Shortening
1/2 cup White Sugar
1/2 cup Brown Sugar
1/2 cup Peanut Butter
1 Egg
2 tbs Milk
1 sp Vanilla
48 Hershey Kisses
small bowl with 1/2 cup of sugar (for rolling cookie dough in; add more as needed)
Heat oven to 375 degree
Put all ingredients, except kisses, into a large bowl and mix until blended on medium speed and dough forms.
Shape dough into walnut sized balls and roll in sugar. Place ball on cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
Bake cookies for 10-12 minutes. Top each cookie immediately with a kiss; press down firmly with kiss so cookie cracks around edges.
Happy 89th Birthday Grandma!
Love, Jennifer

What an adorable photo! Too cute.
The cookies look fantastic. My daughter loves it when her grandma makes those kind too. The kiss seals it for her!
Yay! Thank you!
Aghhhh! Grandma’s kisses are the best!
